IN GOOD COMPANY WITH BRUCE PASK
In Good Company is a series of conversations with the people shaping creative and entrepreneurial culture around the world.
Bruce Pask, AVP of the Men’s Fashion Office for Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue, is partial to authentic style. In a life lived in service to and in admiration of fashion, Bruce has pinpointed a signature style that draws on his experiences from every corner of the industry. Unafraid of a little sartorial risk, yet secure in the pieces he swears by, Bruce stopped by our SoHo store and gave us his notes on clothing and the beauty of being a New Yorker that enjoys staying in from time to time.
Your New York City day in three stops?
Subway, promenade walk on the East River after work, and dinner at home. My partner is a great cook so we often stay in for dinner. I enjoy quiet evenings at home as a nice balance to the frenetic activity of city living.
Personal style in three words?
Do we have to do three? Ok… I'd say ‘Mildly Eccentric American’, or ‘Polished But Relaxed’. I'm always curious to try new things but I do have a pretty clear aesthetic and style that I maintain.
What's your most irrational style rule?
I feel it's more important for people to have permission to wear what makes them feel great, and that to me is more important than any kind of rule. Permissiveness is my irrational style rule.

Any fall style favourites?
I'm loving suede jackets for Fall. The neutral palette, the lighter weight and the shorter lengths give them a real versatility. I think people tend to associate suede with the colder months, but these feel very year-round, more transitional than ever. With suede, I think people need to remember not to be too precious about their garments––go all out! I love when it develops a patina, and people wear it enough that it develops character, that's what makes it such a good heirloom.
Who or what has had the greatest influence on your outlook?
I’ve been very fortunate to have learned from some exceptional leaders during the course of my career in fashion editorial and the luxury retail world and pass that knowledge along by mentoring the next generation.
Is there a cultural shift or emerging trend that you find particularly fascinating right now?
I really appreciate that the rules of menswear are dissipating in favor of a more permissive, adventurous approach. I support self-expression in fashion and enjoy seeing people finding the joy in getting dressed.
What's one very 'ordinary' New York City ritual that you think deserves more attention?
Shopping for a meal the same day we're cooking it. I'm a big Trader Joe's fan and have one right around the corner so we visit many times a week.
Do you have a go-to SoHo spot?
Years ago my favorite spot was a great hangout on Prince Street called Jerry's, a lively canteen filled with a fascinating mix of folks where I would often eat at the bar. These days, I like wandering the shops on Mulberry Street.
If you weren't in New York right now, where would you be?
Oh, Bellport! A bayside village on the south shore of Long Island where I have a little cottage
Where are you heading to after this?
I'm going uptown to Sutton Place. We moved there a couple of years ago after living in the East Village for many years. It's the far east side of midtown and on the river. The neighborhood is lovely and quiet, with beautiful pre-war residential buildings and an incredible view of the Queensborough Bridge.
Can you give us a cultural recommendation?
I love listening to the Pivot podcast hosted by Kara Swisher and Scott Galloway while I’m driving. It helps me better understand the worlds of tech and business and I find their banter immensely entertaining.
