Conceptualized circa. mid-20th century on the sands between the Atlantic ocean and the art-deco edifices of the Cidade Maravilhosa; frescobol was created to subvert the competitiveness of tennis while simultaneously adapting to its coastal home on the shores of Copacabana. Inherently collaborative, quintessentially Carioca and our namesake: learn how to play the game of frescobol.
Equipment
A set of frescobol bats is the first indispensable step; two rackets and a ball (though we recommend enthusiastic players have a few backups). If played in its intended environment, additional recommended equipment includes sunscreen, some form of hat and/or cap, and swimwear that allows for freedom of bold movement. Lastly, and arguably most importantly, a trusted playing partner.
Set Up
Players should stand approximately 8 meters across from each other, though this can be adjusted depending on experience or desired game intensity. This recommended distance lends itself perfectly to open, flat spaces; whether on sand, grass or asphalt.
Playthrough
With a solid stance on the ground, legs slightly bent and a tennis-like grip on the bat, one is ready to begin their frescobol match. One player serves, the next returns the ball. From this point forward, in true Carioca fashion, the rules may vary: players can choose to be as relaxed, competitive, or technical as they like. There are those that choose to measure the length of the rally, the speed of the ball, the height of each swing; and there are those that simply hope to keep playing as long as there is sunshine above their heads. This is the beauty of the game - all that really matters is that all players enjoy their time to the rhythmic “knock-knock” of frescobol.
