In line with the release of our second Aman collaboration – this time with a focus on their Tokyo location – we spoke to Sarah-Louise Marks and Christopher Phelps of The Adventures of Us to learn why the travel duo was also inspired by Aman Tokyo, and unearth the eastern capital’s hidden gems.
We have always had a strong desire to visit Japan and immerse ourselves in a completely new and different culture from what we are used to. We love Japanese food and have always admired the Japanese sense of style. It has been our travel wish list for a few years now, so to experience the culture was a dream come true.
What did you learn about the culture during your visit?
We learnt patience. The Japanese take a huge amount of pride in all aspects of their lives. They are clean, polite, and patient. We left Japan feeling enriched by their manner and way of life, it was very inspiring.
How would you describe the city in three words?
Enormous, eclectic, exciting!
What are the must-see places to visit in the city?
For something iconic, a visit to the Shibuya Crossing, and for contemporary design boutiques and one-of-a-kind vintage stores, explore the maze of pristine streets in the Shibuya District. Another invaluable thing to do is to take a walk around the historic gardens of the world-famous Meiji Jingu Shrine.
Japan is very known for its remarkable cuisine. What dishes would you advise anyone tries when visiting the city?
Be sure to dine at Shima or Wagyu Mafia for the world’s finest Wagyu beef.
For fresh sushi, book a seat at the chef’s table at Sushi Nakamura or Sukiyabashi Jiro. For a trendy yet traditional Japanese, lunch at Maison Tonkotsu, and for something special, dine by candlelight with the best views of the city at Arva in Aman Tokyo.
From the moment you walk into the lobby, you are floored by the incredible architecture and remarkable views across the city.
You mentioned dining at the Aman Tokyo, what was your experience like there?
Aman Tokyo is one of the most unique and impressive hotels we have ever had the pleasure of staying at. From the moment you walk into the lobby, you are floored by the incredible architecture and remarkable views across the city. The rooms and sunset views are awe-inspiring.
Do you have an unforgettable memory from your visit?
I think seeing the sprawling city from 38 floors up in our room at the Aman – that was an unforgettable memory. We were in shock at how huge this city was!
What travel items are essential for you?
We always like to dress in accordance with our location and tend to keep things fairly simple, but some travelling essentials include a 35mm pocket camera, a portable speaker, and our hats.
What are your favourite Frescobol Carioca pieces?
We are huge admires of the Frescobol Carioca x Aman collections, the designs reflect the different locations and lifestyle perfectly, and they feel so natural to wear on our travels.
